To Create Change, Sometimes We Need a New View of Reality

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” – Buckminster Fuller

The past months leading up to the election have been contentious. I have written at least one veiled post about the election, but I have not wanted to enter the fray. The reason why is that I did not want to comment on a system that is broken. The two party system is broken. The electoral college is broken. The media reporting the election is broken. Entering into discussions about the election is like arguing about which is the fastest route to take when your car is broken. But what is to be done?

buckminster fullerI love the quote above by Buckminster Fuller. Many people in American are unhappy, yet they can not affect the existing reality. The two major parties have too much power and will never let a third party in. The media is a for profit industry which relies on advertising to survive and therefore needs sensationalism to draw eyes to their sponsors. These are the facts, the reality, these issues exist in. Trying to make changes within the existing reality won’t work because you are still in the same model. But what if we created a new model to draw from?

How to change our political system is not something my brain is suited to solve, but Bucky’s concept of creating a new model to replace the old may be able to help you make changes for the better in your life. Here are a few steps to help you make changes in your life by creating a new model.

Define the Situation

What is your current challenge? What are you struggling with? What would you like to change but feel powerless to do so?

Define the Model

What is the model surrounding your challenge? What are the rules you are playing by? What are the parameters you think you need to follow? What beliefs do you have about the situation?

Dispel the Model

Question each part of the model. Who created the rules? Who benefits from the rules? What is the worst thing that would happen if you didn’t follow the rules? If you think something is a law of nature and can not be broken, remember that according to physics the bumblebee should not be able to fly – yet it does. Poke holes in your belief system about the existing model. Release anything in this model which does not aid you.

Create a New Model

What would happen if you reversed or changed the old model beliefs? What foundation or structure would better serve your goals? What new perspective feels empowering?

Uncover New Solutions

What new solutions are available in this new model? How can you create a new life within this new paradigm?

Whenever you feel stuck, go through these steps and see if you can’t find a new model to work within which feels more empowering and free.
